HO Scale Desert Layout Project  -  24-1
It is time for an update on my HO layout (after 8 years)

(just click on the 4-digit number for bigger size photos)
As usual, I am taking a huge amount of photos from a scene to show a lot of different views.

The City of Percyville (from Super 8 to McDonalds) Passage 24-1
We start at the left side and go to McDo just before Werner Enterprises.
Please be aware: Not every photo will get a caption!
Overview of Percyville from left to right with Super 8 Motel, Arco (am/pm) Gas Station, Dennys and KFC.   WL-3492
Dennys, KFC, Pizza-Hut.   WL-3491
KFC, Pizza-Hut, Taco Bell, Cadillac Dealer, Foose Design and West Coast Customs.   WL-3490
Cadillac Dealer, Foose Design, WCC, McDonald's and part of Werner Enterprises at the right side.  WL-3318
After McDo, around the broad curve we have Werner Enterprises (shown on page 24-2).   WL-3321
We are back to the left side of the passage (our starting point).  WL-3562
The double track main line is on ground level and will enter Office 2.  WL-3563
The UP train is inside Office 2 and actually rolling over the flyover on a combined bridge/tunnel.  WL-3565
A nice overview from the passage into Office 2 and the Mormon Rocks in the background.   WL-3568
(Sorry, the background ist out of focus)
Well, the auto transporter is a brass model and it is loaded with 9 Dodge Chargers.   WL-3570
Of course, a Werner Enterprises Truck (not the only one on my layout) is in he middle going uphill.   WL-3576
As I was writing on the intro of the main page, I am not satisfied with the focus problems of the background.   WL-3329
Super 8 Motel is the first building in the City of Percyville.   WL-3480
Percyville is a typical village with gas station and lots of restaurants.   WL-3328
All businesses are accessible thru a business loop as the main street is along the RR tracks.   WL-3337
Just for the photos I was adding a background.   WL-3333
Looking back to the opening going to Office 2.   WL-3467
From Super 8 Motel to the ARCO Gas Station.   WL-3471
The next photos (3472-3476) are from above to see more details.   WL-3472
ARCO Gas Station and Denny's Restaurant.   WL-3473
Denny's and KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken).   WL-3474
KFC and Pizza-Hut and Taco Bell.  BNSF has a mid train helper.  WL-3475
Pizza-Hut and Taco Bell and Cadillac Dealer. BTW: The UP train has 2 mid train helpers.   WL-3476
Taco Bell and Cadillac Dealer and Foose Design and West Coast Customs.   WL-3320
Below we show another view of Percyville from high above (like afrom a drone) with 3 photos (3338-3340)
It looks as we were flying with a drone.   WL-3338
BTW: I was able to buy ARCO, Denny's and KFC from Pelle Soeeborg when he dismantled his Daneville layout.  WL-3339
I really like these views from above.   WL-3340
More overview photos from a different angle.
As you can see, on my layout cars and truck are as important as the  trains.   WL-3466
All diesel locos are from Athearn. AT&SF GP60's are RTR and all others are from Genesis.  WL-3465
For those who are interested, we will show each building close up from different angles.
(Sorry about the huge amount of photos but it just wanted to give an idea what it is all about and it gives the illusion of being here in person)
It seems I did not take close-up pictures from the Super 8 Motel on this update (sorry).  WL-3692
After the Super 8 Motel we have an ARCO Gas Station with an am/pm shop.   WL-3481
This Gas Station is an exact replica of the real thing in the town of Mojave, CA.   WL-3478
It is available as a kit from Summit USA.   WL-3469
When I was in Mojave for a couple of days I got gasoline at this ARCO Gas Station.   WL-3460
Next is a Denny's Restaurant, which is also located in the City of Mojave (custom made by Summit USA for Pelle Soeeborg).  WL-3470
Guess what? I was eating breakfast and dinner in the real Denny's while being in Mojave.  WL-3464
These are actually background buildings but they fit perfect on my layout.   WL-3331
This KFC is also located in Mojave (excat replica by Summit USA for Pelle Soeeborg).   WL-3482
There is no Pizza-Hut in Mojave, but on my layout.  WL-3483
This kit was made by Modellbau-Atelier Berlin, Germany.   WL-3459
I made handicapped parkings near the entrance of each restaurant.  WL-3463
WL-3461
Percyville is a busy place with a double track main line, main street and a business loop.   WL-3691
From Pizza-Hut we go to Taco Bell.   WL-3696
Another angle and the Cadillac Dealer is also visible.   WL-3477
But first, we concentrate on our Taco Bell (made by Summit USA).   WL-3695
Wondering why the white Chevy Corvette is driving on the wrong side of the street?   WL-3378
As my daughter was cleaning and vacuuming my layout for this photo shooting, she did not realize that she put this Corvette afterwards in the wrong direction. I only realized while cutting the photos and it was too late (who cares?) At least there is no dust at all.   WL-3458
This Taco Bell is another Kit made by Summit USA.   WL-3485
Now, we are getting closer to the "Cadillac of Percyville" dealership.  WL-3456
I used a Kit from Faller (Germany) "Car Center" and used the main building only and custom made the roof panels.   WL-3325
WL-3322
As a Cadillac lover, I had to include a Cadillac Delarship on my layout.  WL-3375
WL-3486
 WL-3373
This dealer is selling lots of older Cadillacs but also new vehicles like Cadillac Sixteen and Escalades.  WL-3377
There is a nice display in the showroom.  WL-3457
The salesman will try to sell a white Eldorado to this couple.   WL-3462
WL-3487
Next to the Cadillac Dealership is Foose Design and West Coast Customs (under one roof).   WL-3455
This trailer is ready for the 2015 SEMA show in Las Vegas.   WL-3488
WL-3374
Here is a important story about Foose Design, Werner Meer and the 2015 SEMA Show.
On my layout, Foose Design got a special Trailer to attend the 2015 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
A special Foose Design Truck with Foose Design Logo, SEMA Logo and Impostor (1965 Chevy Impala) poster. - 2426
I was very lucky because I was able to meet Chip Foose back in Fall of 2015. I visitted the Foose Design Garage in Huntington Beach, CA and met Chip in person. I was really overwhelmed to meet a real gentleman. Even he was busy in preparing for he SEMA Show, he took his time talking to me and signing something for me. And during the SEMA Show, I was able to meet him again. I said, "I am sorry to disturb again" and he said, "not at all, nice to see you again". We had a good talk, he signed a poster of the Impostor (1965 Chevy Impala) and we took photos together. I only can tell, it was a wonderful experience to meet such a great person again. On top it was a great honour - thank you Chip.

Foose and WCC are accessible by the business loop. Of course, in real life these two car designers are not at the same location.  WL-3324
Foose Design is at Huntington Beech, CA and West Coast Customs at Burbank, CA.
After McDo we can see Werner Enterprises.   WL-3379
WE is having a siding (spur) to receive containers and trailer by train.   WL-3453
WE is even having his own diesel loco (a former Amtrak P42).   WL-3454
This UP "We ar ONE" Loco was my latest addition to my fleet and it was stored in front of the WE Diesel.   WL-3372
WL-3489
We are aware, there are no more open auto racks in the modern world, but it looks great to see the vehicles instead of hidden.  WL-3380
This MacDonald's was a kit from Vollmer (Germany).   WL-3367
WL-3381
WL-3382
WL-3383
Only on the photo I realized that the upper WE container was moved because I was pulling the well cars on he other side.   WL-3366
After a while, I realized it and moved the upper container to the correct position.   WL-3451
Looking toward the City of Percyville (even it is going out of focus).   WL-3452
This is the final photo of Percyville.    WL-3332
Next will be Werner Enterprises on page 24-2.

to see the other photo pages you may click on the numbers (24-1 to 24-8)

Percyville - Werner Enterprises (Passage/Office 1)   24-2

Werner Enterprises is one of the top 5 trucking companies in the USA.  WL-3447
As my name is Werner, I wanted to create a WE Terminal on my layout.  WL-3344

Percyville  -  Extension (Office 1)   24-3

The Percyville Extension was built just after the combined road and train bridge coming from the WE Terminal.  WL-3406
Overview with bridge, Extension and continuation toward the EAST side Tunnels.  WL-3419

Tunnels EAST side (Office 1) and WEST side (Office 2)   24-4

Tunnels EAST side: From Office 1 we have to pass a wall into Office 2.  WL-3605
Tunnels WEST side: We are inside Office 2. Double main in front is going uphill and rear tracks are going downhill.  WL-3585

Legendary Hill 582 in Cajon Pass (Office 2)  24-5

On my layout, my miniature version of Hill 582 was turned by 90 ° because of space limitations.  WL-3663
But with some imagination, we feel like being in the Mojave Desert (Cajon Pass) and dreaming of the real thing.  WL-3540

Mormon Rocks in Cajon Pass w/Hwy 138 (Office 2)   24-6

The Mormon Rock formations are along Highway 138. UP (former SP) and BNSF tracks are passing.  WL-3510
In real, there are no more street level crossings but with 2 street overpasses (BNSF) and 1 street underpass (UP).  WL-3667

from the Mormon Rocks to the Flyover (upper and lower level)  (Office 2)  24-7

We are standing in the passage and looking into Office 2 to get an overview from the crossover to the Mormon Rocks. WL-3568
(sorry, the rear section is not sharp)
Drone shot: The flyover is having a bridge and a short tunnel.   WL-3697
Inside Office 2 a Santa Fe train is leaving the short tunnel under the upper track toward the Mormon Rocks.  WL-3495

along the shelf (width = 40 cm) from the crossover to the bridge going to Office 1 (Office 2)   24-8
Upper level tracks are going downhill through the shelf toward the exit (bridge) to Office 1.  WL-3652
The Santa Fe train is going uphill toward the Flyover and the UP train is going downhill toward the bridge leading into Office 1.  WL-3627

I started with my layout in late December 2007 and it was finally finshed in late September 2015.
In the meantime, I made some detailing with city signs, billboards, figures, vehicles etc.
