We start our 2025 photo documentation not with Cajon Pass but with West Palm Springs
Just after New Year Holiday, Marc spent four days camping & railfanning on the UP (old SP) Sunset route at W. Palm Springs, CA.  Rail traffic was moderate, however Marc was able to photograph two of the UP HERITAGE units.

BNSF Officier's Special from L.A. to Needles via Cajon Pass on January 21, 2025
On 21 Jan, BNSF ran a nine car Officer's Special (OS) from L.A. to Needles. Marc was in position to photograph the train however a VERY VERY BRIGHT sun and the SUPER reflective silver fluting on the train cars made photography extremely difficult -- at best. I have added a few screen captures of said train.  GGG & MF

This past Saturday friend Pete and I got trackside on a truly beautiful day. We started at Cajon Station and after a late breakfast at Da Dump we went eastward as far as a spot just east of Hodge, specifically Johnston's Corner where Hinkley Rd. intersects the tracks. DOC JONES on the SUNSET ROUTE (taken on Feb 15, 2025)
After an insanely busy holiday season 2024 and a really rough start to 2025 I finally had the opportunity to get trackside. This past Saturday (15 Feb) my friend Pete and I headed out the former SP Sunset Route from Redlands toward Cabazon, CA. Those of you who have railfanned this area wouldn't recognize it from the development of homes and businesses. We did find some good spots where the tracks are not surrounded by homes and got a few photos. As the railfan gods would have it the sun was mostly on the wrong side and neither of us wanted to risk crossing the tracks at our tender ages of 70+
For those of you who have railfanned San Timoteo Canyon in years past please Google it and see how much development has taken place over the years. Pretty soon it will be solid housing from Redlands to Beaumont.
Take care and enjoy,  Bruce (Doc) Jones

Cajon Pass 3rd Main Track Construction by BNSF in 2007 and 2008
BNSF was building a 3rd Main Track thru Cajon Pass. It was built along the # 1 (north) track (2,2 % grade). The only 2 tunnels in Cajon have been daylighted.
This one of a time project was completed on November 07, 2008.
