Cajon Pass Photo Collection
June 30, 2011
by Werner Meer (Switzerland)

Day 9 - NINE - 434 Photos

Route 66 - Cajon Blvd.
Mormon Rocks - Pine Lodge
Sullivans Curve
along Highway 138
Alray (former Tunnel Area)
Pine Lodge Overlook

No question, I had a fantastic time in exploring Cajon from every corner. In addition, I did my own exploring in using several power line roads. To be honest, I was sometimes at the limit with my minivan and even had to move some rocks out of the road to be able to pass slowly. Actually a big 4x4 pickup truck or SUV would have been best.
This time, I took photos (5550) from these locations: Summit, Silverwood, WSI, Hill 582, Alray (former Tunnel area), Mormon Rocks, Stein's Hill, around Highway 138, Sullivan's Curve, Cajon Station, old Route 66 (Cajon Blvd.), Swarthout Canyon Road and finally San Bernardino. As I went to several overlooks high above, I was trying to take photos from far away. Not every photo was good because of the long distance, haze and the heavy wind.
Please note: As a train does not only exist of the locos but all the cars, I made plenty photos of the different cars (incl. graffiti).
I also visited the Fontana Terminal of Werner Enterprises trucking company. A great experience to see the real thing as I am building an HO scale layout (1/87) with Trucks & Trailers of Werner Enterprises: http://www.trainmaster.ch/layout.htm

Route 66 - Cajon Blvd.

Day 9: Same procedure as every day. I was driving uphill on old Route 66 (Cajon Blvd.) and already got a BNSF EB at Blue Cut in the early sun at 06.45 h.

Mormon Rocks - Pine Lodge

When I arrived at the Mormon Rocks / Pine Lodge area, there was already a BNSF EB DBS Trains going uphill and I was able to take 8 photos.

Remember my first train of the day was pictured at Blue Cut around 06.45 h during my daily procedure driving on Route 66 uphill to Cajon. As I am currently sitting on Stein's Hill and took pictures of the BNSF Intermodal Train, I looked back and I could see the headlight of the very same (First Train of Day 9). 15

along Highway 138

After visitting Sullivans Curve, I was driving toward Highway 138. Just in front of my Van are the rare Joshua Trees in Cajon Pass. (21 pics)
WM 6/30/11 Hwy 138 can hardly be seen - 40424  at left is BNSF MT-2 and MT-1 - 40425  Mormon Rocks at 09.00 h - 40426

it is an all TOFC train - 40431 going under Hwy 138 bridge - 40433 time 09.22 h - 40434
Big surprise, at the same time I was looking toward MT-3 and I could see delayed Amtrak # 3 Southwest Chief WB comig downhill. As my current position (near the Joshua Trees) is by far not ideal to see MT-3, I could only take some tele-photos.

After the Amtrak train passed, I left the South side of Highway 138. I could use the Santa Fe Fire Road, cross Hwy 138 amd use part of old Route 66 between BNSF MT-3 and MT-2/MT-1 on the North side. Here are the famous Mormon Rocks with BNSF MT-2/MT-1 in front. (20 pics)

that's the end of the BNSF WB Ethanol Train. The rear end DPU's are rolling under Hwy 138 bridge at 11.01 h.

Alray (former Tunnel Area)

After visitting the Mormon Rocks, I went on Highway 138 E, crossed I-15 and made a left onto Baldy Mesa Road (parallel to I-15 NB). This dirt road will pass BNSF MT-3 and lead me to BNSF MT-2/MT-1 and UPT as well. While driving on Baldy Mesa, there was a BNSF WB bare table coming donw on MT-3. So, I stopped, jumped off the van and started to take pictures. After the first 3 pics, I was walking toward MT-3 and was climbing the access road to the right of the bridge to go on track level. (119 pics)

Afterwards, I walked back to my van and continued on Baldy Mesa Rd. to Alray. I was too late to catch the whole train and could only take 3 pics of this intermodal EB train on MT-2. I am standing next to MT-2, near former Tunnel 2 West portal.

40509 here is the third Werner Trailer - 40510 EOT 2 EB Intermodal - 40512
The time has come to relocate my position. As we all know, trespassing of active tracks are not recommended. So, I drove down to Baldy Mesa Rd., made a right turn and under the BNSF tracks and the UP track. Here I could make a right onto the UP service road, which is also a USFS road (3N53), a legal road. But, once again, I was too late to catch the whole UP WB on BNSF MT-2 (just 5 pics was the result).

Pine Lodge Overlook

Afterwards, I went back to Highway 138 W, crossed I-15, BNSF MT-3, BNSF MT-2/MT1, UPT and made a left into Lone Pine Canyon Road and another left into USFS 2N89 (UP service road). After approx. 300 m I went up on a Powerline Road (actually a Forest Road 3N49). This lookout is near a power line tower.
This time, I was at the right time at the right place because we have a down hill race of 2 different trains at the same time. Train 1 is a BNSF WB Intermodal on BMSF MT-2 and Train 2 is another BNSF WB Intermodal on BNSF MT-3. The only small disturbance are the power line cables.  (39 pics)
