Cajon Pass Photo
Collection June 23, 2011 |
by Werner Meer (Switzerland) |
Day 2 - TWO - 600 photos |
Palm Ave. Crossing Cleghorn Exit Overlook I-15 / Hwy 138 Overlook |
This time, I took photos (5550) from these locations: Summit, Silverwood, WSI, Hill 582, Alray
(former Tunnel area), Mormon Rocks, Stein's Hill, around Highway 138, Sullivan's Curve,
Cajon Station, old Route 66 (Cajon Blvd.), Swarthout Canyon Road and finally Palm Ave. Crossing.
As I went to several overlooks high above, I was trying to
take photos from far away. Not every photo was good because of the long distance,
haze and the heavy wind. I even used a "monopod" to reduce the vertical
vibration. Abbreviations found on this page: EB = East Bound, NB = North Bound, SB = South Bound, WB = West Bound, MT-1 = BNSF Main 1, MT-2 = BNSF Main 2, MT-3 = BNSF Main 3, UPT = Union Pacific Track, MP = Mile Post, DBS = Double Stack Train, IM = Intermodal Train, TOFC = Trailer on Flat Car, EOT = End of Train, DRR = Davis Ranch Road |
For bigger size photos - please click on the 4-digit number below each photo.
Each album covers a full day. Therefore, you may see the same location on
several albums but on different days.
Palm Ave. Crossing
Every morning same procedure: I was driving Cajon Blvd. (old Route 66) up to Cajon. Today, I got the first train at Palm Ave. Crossing. (12 photos)
WM 6/23/11 I was too late to catch the locos - 1580 | Cargill silos along Cajon Blvd. at Verdemont - 1579 | BNSF EB DBS train - 1581 |

Cleghorn Exit Overlook
Cleghorn Exit Overlook To get a better idea about this location, I am including a map and an aerial photo. |
||
Here are some
Infos Today, I spent the whole morning at this location. The result are a total of 249 photos. I made it to Overlook 1 and 2 and 3. On the aerial photo 4049, Cleghorn Road goes to the left and uphill (see map). From left: I-15, Cajon Blvd., BNSF MT-3 (3%), MT-2 & MT-1 (2,2%) going to Sullivans Curve. |

Cleghorn Exit Overlook on Power Line Road, which is also a Forest
Service Road: 2N47. We have a great view on I-15, BNSF MT-1, -2, -3 and the
UPT. We are on the East side of the valley and can see almost down to
Swarthout Canyon Road Curve and up to Sullivans Curve. Not all photos are
really sharp because of the big distance and the heavy wind. I even used a
"monopod" to reduce the vertical vibration. Sorry about some truck photos on
Interstate 15 but there is also some fascination on the road, especially if
there is a Werner truck appearing ! ! (249 photos) Overlook 1: I wanted to go to a higher elevation but there was already a UP SB train coming down from Sullivans Curve and therefore, I had to stop as soon as I was going uphill on the dirt road coming off Cleghorn Exit (I-15) actually from Cajon Blvd. |

After all, I was able to go to a higher position. On photos 1664 and 1665 we can see the dirt road around a hill and going uphill to the overlook 2 on 1668.
Powerline Road from Cleghorn Exit - 1664 | it is also a Forest Service Road: 2N47 - 1665 | here is the Cleghorn Overlook - 1668 |
Let's make a tour as seen from this higher overlook 2: 1658 = view toward Swarthout Canyon Curve. We are looking South. From left to right: I-15, Route 66, BNSF MT-3, MT-2, MT-2 and UPT. 1659 = looking South-West. 1660 = we are looking more or less 90 degree to I-15 and it is almost West. 1661 = Cleghorn Exit and Sullivans Curve in the distance. 1662 = Sullivans Curve in the middle. 1663 = looking North-West with Mormon Rocks and Highway 138. We have the Hill at right blocking our view. But this power line road was closed with a big gate and therefore, no access to the top of it.

I took a lot of photos of Train 8, a UP SB manifest coming down on UP's Colton-Palmdale Cutoff. The first photo (1715) shows this UP train coming from the Mormon Rocks / Highway 138 toward Sullivans Curve. On 1716, it will enter Sullivans Curve and I made several pictures with the famous rock formations (probably too many). If it is too much for you, just scroll down. (total of 36 photos)

I was the whole morning on this Cleghorn Overlook and got 13 different trains. I went to an even higher location (overlook 4) with the total overview of the valley from SWC to almost Summit on DAY EIGHT. Please be patient until these photos will be online this Fall. |
I-15 / Hwy 138 Overlook
I-15 / Hwy 138 Overlook Powerline Road above UP Track - Overlook: From Highway 138, Mormon Rocks to Interstate 15 and down to Mc Donalds. We can see all tracks from UPT (Colton - Palmdale Cutoff), BNSF MT-1, BNSF MT-2 down to BNSF MT-3. I have seen photos from this overlook (location) on railpictures.net and thought, I have to find this spot as well. I was looking on Google Maps and found this Powerline Road (actually a Forest Road 3N49). |

Let me explain the maps and the aerial photo: Map1 gives an overview of this area and shows Overlook 1 and 2. Map 1183 shows how to exit from Highway 138 and get on Forest Road 2N89 which will bring us to the Powerline Road (3N49). On aerial photo 4041, we can see the Powerline Road going uphill above the UPT. |
I-15 / Highway 138 Overlook: In the afternoon, I went again uphill on Powerline Road (actually a Forest Road 3N49) above the UP track to a higher Overlook 2 (as seen on DAY ONE). We are on the West side of the valley. The first train is a BNSF WB coming down on MT-3, which can already be seen on the East side of Interstate 15. (339 photos) |

After train 14 was gone, and train 11 was still sitting in the siding, I decided to drive down from my overlook. On the way down, I took photo 2014 before I was on track level. Once I reached the "parked" UP train, I was able to take some detail photos of the different DBS cars.

So, I left this location and was driving along the UP service road toward Highway 138. Surprise, there was a BNSF WB DBS coming down on MT-2. Of course, there was no more time to go to a good position or cross the UP tracks. But I just did not want to let it pass without any picture and took some photos as is.

Day TWO was again a very satisfactory day with lots of trains. Except the early morning train at Palm Ave. Crossing, I went to just two different locations (overlook), only. Both elevated spots were new to me (I just checked both on day ONE). It is really something special to see the trains from high above. I sure hope, you liked it as well. More elevated spots will be seen during the next days. Please be patient until these will be online. |
