After just 1 year, the time has come to visit Cajon Pass and our friends from Hill 582 again. No question, I had a fantastic time in exploring Cajon from every corner. A big thank you goes to Don Toles and Gary Gray, who showed me some new spots (elevated locations) which I did not know so far. In addition, I did my own exploring in using several power line roads. To be honest, I was sometimes at the limit with my minivan and even had to move some rocks out of the road to be able to pass slowly. Actually a big 4x4 pickup truck or SUV would have been best. I did not only meet my friends and photographers of Hill 582 (Don, Gary and Marc) but also Jerry Shinar (hilltender of WSI), Keith Schreiber, Ron Davidson and Chuck Donaldson.
Chuck is also having a great web site with fantastic photos: http://somewherewest.com/
This time, I took photos (5550) from these locations: Summit, Silverwood, WSI, Hill 582, Alray (former Tunnel area), Mormon Rocks, Stein's Hill, around Highway 138, Sullivan's Curve, Cajon Station, old Route 66 (Cajon Blvd.), Swarthout Canyon Road and finally Palm Ave. Crossing. As I went to several overlooks high above, I was trying to take photos from far away. Not every photo was good because of the long distance, haze and the heavy wind.
Please note: As a train does not only exist of the locos but all the cars, I made plenty photos of the different cars (incl. graffiti).
I also visited the Fontana Terminal of Werner Enterprises trucking company. A great experience to see the real thing as I am building an HO scale layout (1/87) with Trucks & Trailers of Werner Enterprises: http://www.trainmaster.ch/layout.htm
Also for my layout, I got my very first Joshua Trees in HO scale (1:87). These are made by Mason Clark in a accurate shape and really look like the original (great job):  http://www.mstrains.com/

Hey, are we having fun yet?
No question, yes, we sure do!

Each album covers a full day. Therefore, you may see the same location on several albums but on different days.

Last year (2010), I made albums sorted by a specific location. This year (2011), I show all photos taken within one single day and therefore, we can see different locations. Day ONE was June 22 with a total of 522 photos. Because of the time difference of 9 hours between Switzerland and California, I was able to get up early (5 a.m.) had breakfast 6 a.m. and left the motel around 6.30 a.m. From San Bernardino North, I was always driving uphill on Cajon Blvd. (old Route 66). As the sun was at the right side, I was able to take photos between Keenbrook and Cajon Station.

Cajon Blvd. (old Route 66) Blue Cut

Our first location is along Cajon Blvd. at Keenbrook (just coming from I-15 Exit # 124). In the foreground is old Route 66 and the Cajon Creek. (6 photos)

Rolling Cajon Blvd. slowly uphill, we got the next train just below Blue Cut on the UP Track (Colton - Palmdale Cutoff). It is a UP SB manifest (mixed train). As we can see plenty cars with graffiti, a modern model layout should have that kind of freight cars in their consist ! !  (27 photos)

Cleghorn Exit Overlook

Cleghorn Exit Overlook
To get a better idea about this location, I am including a map and an aerial photo.
Here are some Infos

Today, I went the first time to this location.
As I had an appointment with my friends on Hill 582, there was not much time, but at least, I made it to Overlook 1 and 2. I will go again on Day TWO.

On the aerial photo 4049, Cleghorn Road goes to the left and uphill (see map).
From left: I-15, Cajon Blvd., BNSF MT-3 (3%), MT-2 & MT-1 (2,2%) going to Sullivans Curve.
I-15 with Cleghorn Exit looking North - Map4   I-15 & Cleghorn Exit # 129 looking South  - 4049

Cleghorn Exit Overlook on Power Line Road, which is also a Forest Service Road: 2N47. We have a great view on I-15, BNSF MT-1, -2, -3 and the UPT. We can see almost down to Swarthout Canyon Road Curve and up to Sullivans Curve. Not all photos are really sharp because of the big distance and the heavy wind. Sorry about some truck photos on Interstate 15 but there is also some fascination on the road, especially if there is a Werner truck appearing ! ! (24 photos)
Interstate 15 is always busy - 1037 Cleghorn Exit # 129 is our starting point . .  - 1038 . . to go uphill on 2N47 to the overlook - 1039

Werner and Marten TOFC's - 1054 the front end is already entering Sullivans - 1055 Sullivans Curve is a famous location - 1056
the track at the left is the UP track - 1058 since 2008, there are 2 BNSF tracks . . - 1059 . .  around Sullivans Curve - 1060
 - 1061  - 1062  - 1063
once again, the blue Werner trailer shows up - 1065  - 1066 End of train (last photo of this EB) - 1067
For your info: This was my first experiance at this location. But I went again to a higher location on 2N47 which will be shown on Day TWO and EIGHT.

Hill 582 (visit no. 1)

The time has come to go to Hill 582 and meet my friends, Don E. Toles, Gary G. Gray and Jerry Shinar. The first train was coming downhill on MT-3. Too bad, but in the morning track 3 is against the light as seen from the Hill. Nevertheless, I still took some photos. (Total of 312 photos)

In August 2010, Don Toles and Jerry Shinar built two flag pole foundations on the Hill. Now, there is a chance to have the American Flag and a "Guest" Flag. When I reached the Hill this morning, Don already mounted the American Flag to put a warm welcome for my 2011 visit. As soon as Gary Gray came to the Hill, he immediately put the Swiss Flag up. Therefore, everybody knew there must be a Swiss guy around. Thank you Don and Gary for this honor.

In other words, more foreigeners than domestic people. It seems, Hill 582 became the international "Hot Spot" in Cajon Pass.

The first train is a Union Pacific SB on the Colton-Palmdale Cutoff. I am just above Highway 138 and the UP track on the UP service road. This is actually a Forest Service Road (USFS 2N89) and can be used to reach Sullivans Curve as well. How to get here? From I-15 take Hwy 138 West. After the UP bridge (underpass) make a left turn into Lone Pine Canyon Road and soon after again a left into 2N89 (dirt road). (Total of 63 photos)

I have seen photos from this overlook (location) on railpictures.net and thought, I have to find this spot as well. I was looking on Google Maps and found this Powerline Road (actually a Forest Road 3N49).
