Summit, West Summit Island, Silverwood |
This time, Melinda (my wife) came also along and she
sure enjoyed this trip, doing a lot of railfanning. We met Beat &
Christa Wuest (Switzerland) and we had 2 fantastic days in exploring Cajon Pass
from Summit to Silverwood, Hill 582, Alray, Mormon Rocks, Sullivan's Curve down
to Swarthout Canyon Road and old Route 66 (Cajon Blvd). On this page, we are going to show photos we took at Summit and Silverwood. List of photographers: Beat & Christa Wuest (BW), Werner & Melinda Meer (MM) (Switzerland). Guest photographers: Gary G. Gray, (USA). A big thank you for sharing these excellent pictures with us. Note: The copyright belongs to these people. Do not use any photos without written permission. Abbreviations found on this page: EB = East Bound, NB = North Bound, SB = South Bound, WB = West Bound, MT-1 = BNSF Main 1, MT-2 = BNSF Main 2, MT-3 = BNSF Main 3, UPT = Union Pacific Track, MP = Mile Post, DBS = Double Stack Train, SWC = Swarthout Canyon Road Crossing, WSI = West Summit Island, USFS = United States Forest Service Road. |

Part 1: Summit and Silverwood
On Saturday, May 29, 2010, after our visit to Hill 582, we went in the afternoon to Summit MP 55.9 with Beat & Christa Wüest. Summit is easy to reach using Hwy 138 from I-15 intersection going uphill. Just above Summit Cut there is a space for parking the car and you can look down to Summit. All 3 BNSF tracks are together with switches to move trains from one to the other track. The UP track (Colton-Palmdale) cutoff is above BNSF Summit and is called: Hiland. Hardly visible on photo 2146 above left (below powerline towers).

On Sunday, May 30, 2010, instead of visitting Hill 582 again, we decided to go to Silverwood with Beat & Christa Wüest. Silverwood is below Summit at MP 57.2X (see aerial photos 195-2 and 195-3) From Hwy 138 we took the Powerline road (USFS 3N45) and before BNSF MT-3 we made a left turn and drove up to the Silverwood lookout (space for 3-4 cars). Here we can see all 4 tracks (BNSF and UP). No wonder, once all 4 tracks were occupied with a train at the same time. Do not be surprised why the ladies are running around with an umbrella. Christa offered her Cowboy hat to Werner because of the heavy burned ears.

MM said, go out and chase the trains - 2491 | yes madam, here comes a UP EB on MT-2 - 2492 | UP 7705 = GE C45AC/CTE, built 2007 - 2493 |

Today, we were very lucky as we got 4 trains at the same time at Silverwood. The first train was a UP EB DBS on BNSF MT-2 going uphill (see photos 2492 - 2497). The second train was again a UP using the Silverwood connector from BNSF to UP tracks (starting with photo 2498). The third train was a BNSF EB (bare table) on MT-1 (starting with photo 2506). And finally train no. 4 was a BNSF WB coming down on MT-3 (starting with photo 2513). To see all 4 trains on the same picture, we should have a panoramic camera.
UP EB on BNSF MT-2 is train no. 1 - 2497 | train 1 at left, train 2 at right - 2498 | train 2: UP WB at powerline tower - 2499 |

both trains pass Powerline road - 2503 | Beat is thinking of the next photo - 2504 | the cowboys are looking at the trains - 6605 MM |
Cajon is the place for great activities - 2505 | first engines of UP train 2 on UPT - 6606 MM | both "boys" are very exited - 6607 MM |
Christa is also active in taking photos - 6608 MM | between the containers is a BNSF loco EB - 2506 | UP DPU's helping the UP DBS EB train 1 - 6609 MM |
First, we did not realize train 3 as it was also coming uphill on MT-1, parallel to the UP DBS on MT-2. On photo 2506, just behind the Evergreen container is one of the two BNSF locos visible. On photo 6609, this train 3 cannot be seen because the UP (train 1) DBS cars and locos are covering the empty DBS cars. But when you look close on photo 2507, you can see a well car left of the UP DPU's (helpers). On photo 2508, there is a undecorated F40PH included in the UP SB (train 2) and just below we can see the top of a DBS well car, which belongs to train 3 and the last UP DPU of train 1.
Above train 2: UP SB w/5 units and F40PH - 2507 | This F40PH is probably a transfer - 2508 | Train 1 above and train 3 below - 6611 MM |
One shot = 3 trains on one picture - 6612 MM | the parallel race on BNSF MT-1 and MT-2 - 2509 | soon, the BNSF train 3 will slow down - 8042 BW |
Train 3: BNSF EB is slowing down - 2510 | because train 1; UP EB is having priority - 2511 | Auto racks on train 2 above DBS train 1 - 2512 |
Beat & Werner can see train 4 at right - 6613 MM | here we go - train 4 is a BNSF WB DBS - 2513 | behind train 4 is still train 1 going to summit - 2514 |
full size graffiti box car on UP train 2 - 2515 | who did ever expect to see a 4th train - 6615 MM | train 2: UP, train 3: BNSF, train 4: BNSF - 2516 |
left BNSF train 3, right BNSF train 4 - 6617 MM | BNSF EB on MT-1, BNSF WB on MT-3 - 2517 | DPU's of UP train 2, below train 3 - 2518 |
BNSF EB train 3 is on hold - 2519 | train 4 with 4 GE diesels on MT-3 - 2520 | just before Powerline road X-ing - 6620 MM |

nice view because we are elevated to MT-3 - 2524 | train 3 and 4 can be seen - 2525 | soon, train 3 will slowly start moving - 2526 |
once again, 3 trains visible - 2527 | no comment - 2528 | diff. angle taken by Melinda - 6623 MM |
lots of J.B. Hunt containers - 2529 | nice mix of containers on train 4 - 6624 MM | see the diff. angle between photo 2530 and 6625 MM |
Schneider and J.B. Hunt containers - 2530 | both trains are passing Hill 582 - 2532 | Hill 582 in the middle of train 4 and train 2 - 2533 |
Beat takes one more photo - 2531 | train 3 (BNSF EB) is rolling uphill above - 2534 | after the DBS cars are some TOFC's - 2536 |
last photo before the trains are gone - 2535 | we are leaving the Silverwood overlook - 6626 MM | and go back to Powerline road - 6630 MM |
We were satisfied at this location as we had great activities. We are leaving Silverwood on these dirt roads (6626 - 6630) from the overlook and go back on Powerline road (3N45) to Hwy 138 and proceed to Alray (former Tunnel area). These photos will be shown in the future on a separate page. Just be patient as it takes a while to prepare the photos. |
