May 1989
by Werner Meer, Switzerland
Bonus Photos: Barstow - Tehachapi (194 photos)

Note: The copyright belongs to this gentleman. Do not use any photos without written permission.

Back in 1989 digital photography did not exist. Therefore, a good friend of mine took the time to scan my old negatives. A big thank you goes to Marc Rossire. Well, colors and quality are sometimes not the best but on the other hand, I can show what happened back in the old days in and around Cajon Pass.
My Minolta SLR Camera had a problem with the shutter and we got sometimes dark at the right side.
This could only be seen, once the films have been developed at the lab.
This trip, my classmate (school friend) Balz Lehmann came along. While I was taking photos, he was responsible for video filming on super VHS.
In Memoriam of my dear friend Balz Lehmann 2.08.1949 - 22.09.2023
Thank you for having a great time together in Cajon,Tehachapi and Barstow back in 1989

Here is the story of the Cajon Creek Sand: Balz and me are both model railroaders. My plan was always to build a layout Mojave Desert style incl. Cajon Pass. Therefore, I wanted to get some real sand from the Cajon area. As you can see on photos 013 to 016, Balz was taking care of collecting the fine sand into this plastic container back in May 1989 and it still exists in April 2022 (photo 017). When doing the landscaping on my HO scale layout, I decided to use a lighter color sand as the real sand became too dark after using the glue.
Take a look on my HO layout:  click here
