Cajon Pass Photo Collection
October 2005
by Werner Meer, Switzerland

Note: The copyright belongs to this photographer. Do not use any photos without written permission.

The weather conditions were not the best. Some rain and even clouds kept us on the paved roads. But old Route 66 (Cajon Boulevard) is still a good place to take pictures in the lower Canyon up to Cajon Station. Even Highway 138 gives us access to the Mormon Rocks area as there is a small part of old Hwy 138 which can be used to drive from the BNSF South track to the North track. Therefore, no photos of Sullivan's Curve or the 2 Tunnels this time. Photos were taken between October 16 and 18, 2005.
But on the last day of our trip, October 19, 2005, the weather changed and the sun showed up. So, we went to explore Hill 582. It was an outstanding experience, especially as we met the most important man of the Hill, Don E. Toles. Thank you for your wonderful friendship.

Photos are sorted by location and date (not by railroad):
Hill 582 Area, Mormon Rocks/Stein's Hill/Pine Lodge/HWY 138, Cajon Station/Junction, Graffiti Bridge, Blue Cut, Lower Canyon, Devore, San Bernardino.

Abbreviations found on this page: EB = East Bound, NB = North Bound, SB = South Bound, WB = West Bound, MP = Mile Post, NT = North Track (2,2%), ST = South Track (3%),  DPU = Distributed Power Unit (Helpers), JAC-BAR = San Jacinto to Barstow Train

Cajon Pass' famed "Mormon Rocks" are a series of cemented sandstone beds much more resistant to erosion than the surrounding gravel and silt sands, giving them a pockmarked appearance. Officially called the Rock Candy Mountains, the strange rock formations are one of the youngest and most active geological regions in North America. Formed by the overlapping of the Baja Plate and the North American Plate, the Mormon Rocks (so nicknamed because this was the preferred route of Amasa Lymand and Charles Rich, who led a band of Mormon settlers from Salt Lake City across the Mojave Desert in 1851) are a visible indicator of the San Andreas Fault (where the two aforementioned tectonic plates collide). Hill 582 - Our very first visit to this wonderful railfan location
Thanks God, today October 19, 2005, the weather was clearing up and even the sun showed up. Therefore, we were able to search for the famous Hill 582. Lucky, we even met Don E. Toles, the "Hilltender". We had a great time together and afterwards, back home in Switzerland, we wrote e-mails forth and back. Glad, Don gave my e-mail to Gary G. Gray, who put me on the mailing list of the Cajon Mafia. From that moment on, I got beautiful photos from Cajon Pass taken by Don, Gary and Marc. Out of this interesting data, I was asking for getting a permission to add their photos on my website. So, the Cajon Photo Collection Pages started and I was able to document the construction of the  3rd Main Track thru Cajon Pass built by BNSF. A big thank you to Don, Gary and Marc for sharing their photos with us. Take a look on our Cajon main page
